Remember ... Leaving Your Batterer can be the Most Dangerous Time
Establish a savings and/or checking account in your own name to establish or increase your independence. Save money when buying groceries by writing the check for slightly over the amount, borrow from friends, family, and put into your personal account.
Leave money, an extra set of keys, copies of important documents and extra clothes with someone you trust so you can leave quickly.
Keep the number close at hand and keep some change or a calling card on you at all times for emergency phone calls. If necessary post the phone number for the Helpline under a factitious name.
Determine who would be able to let you stay with them or lend you some money.
Review your safety plan frequently.
Rehearse an escape plan and practice it with you children.
Calling cards can be purchased at Town Pump, Harvest Foods, Shopco, Walmart, or Target. The cards you purchase from a store are not traceable.
