Nurturing Skills Parent Education Classes

Family Life Skills for Parents and Children

Class Structure:

Each week, parents and children meet both together and separately to learn and explore new skills.

Parent Time:  Parents meet together for 45 minutes.  During this time, parents learn new skills on how to positively parent their children as well as process difficulties they  have experienced.

Children Time:  Children meet together and use art, play and creative interaction to explore new behaviors and techniques.

Family Time:  Parents and children meet together and have time to positively interact while doing a joint activity.  Joining together to eat dinner is an example of family time.

Concept Areas:  Each week the parent's group covers two concepts or content areas.  There are 5 areas of content which include self awareness, empathy, discipline alternatives, age appropriate expectations, and bonding and attachment.

The classes are:  supportive, free, confidential, and non-judgmental.

The group meets once a week for 6 consecutive weeks and is made up of 6 - 8 families.

All families are encouraged to participate:  two-parent, single-parent, step-parent, mothers, fathers, grandparent, etc.

The Nurturing Skills classes are facilitated by SCCFF staff members and trained volunteers.

Each session is highly structured, providing a sense of predictability.

The method of instruction relies very little on lecture.  Instead, concepts are taught through activities which stimulate curiosity, empower the self and maintained energy and interest.
